My journey with celiac disease began in May 2001 when I was just eight years old. Thanks to my mother’s keen attention and persistence, my diagnosis was swift despite the lack of awareness about celiac disease at the time.
I went from being a normal, healthy kid to experiencing severe stomachaches, headaches, bone pain, vision issues, weight loss, and stunted growth seemingly overnight. Numerous medical tests confirmed the presence of antibodies and a biopsy revealed significant damage to my villi, leading to an official diagnosis of celiac disease. While it felt like my world had been turned upside down, it was also the beginning of my healing journey. With the unwavering support of my family, friends, gastroenterologist, and dietitian, I embarked on a path to managing my condition and reclaiming my health.
By 2012, I realized that my ability to adapt to a gluten-free lifestyle was a privilege not shared by all celiacs. Inspired to advocate for our community and raise awareness about our autoimmune disease, I founded the “Lebanese Celiacs” Facebook group, which eventually paved the way for the establishment of the “Lebanese Celiac Association” in Lebanon. Though I later immigrated to Portugal, my commitment to this noble cause remained steadfast, as evidenced by the growth of my Instablog in 2020 and the expanding network of support I continue to foster within the celiac community.
Living with celiac disease has profoundly shaped my character and outlook on life. It has taught me to prioritize my health, advocate for myself, and cultivate gratitude for even the smallest victories. Through this journey, I’ve discovered resilience, patience, and empathy, qualities that have enriched my life in countless ways. In many ways, celiac disease has been a blessing in disguise, shaping me into the person I am today.
